Here are the details...
The easiest way to search for the Kindles and the e-books loaded on them is to simply type "Kindle" in the CLC Library Catalog. You will be directed to a list of Kindles. You can then click on a specific Kindle to view the titles on each one. Each Kindle comes with the electronic book reader, user guide, power cord, and a blue case. CLC students, faculty, and staff can check the Kindles out at the Circulation desk on the 1st floor of the library. The Kindles are available for check out for 21 days.

Mouse Guard (Volume 1): Fall 1152

Have you ever enjoyed books such as The Rats of NIMH or Brian Jacque's Redwall series? Are you a fan of gorgeous and vividly colorful art? Then Mouse Guard will probably appeal to you. This book was created by a printmaker; although it isn't actually a printing, many of the techniques and styles associated with the art form shine through on the pages.

A short synopsis from Archaia Comics:

... mice struggle to live safely and prosper among all of the world’s harsh conditions and predators. Thus the Mouse Guard was formed. They are not simply soldiers that fight off intruders; rather, they are guides for commonmice looking to journey without confrontation from one hidden mouse village to another. ... They do so with fearless dedication so that they might not just exist, but truly live.

The story and wording is quite simple, some of it written in beautiful calligraphy, but it's the art that really moves the story along. It is important to pay attention to the physical differences (such as the color of their fur and their outfits) of each character otherwise it is easy to get confused about what is going on. This book can be enjoyed by children ages ten and up quite easily but it is not strictly for the younger readers; many adults enjoy reading it.

4 X 4 X 4

To better serve our students, the library will begin loaning books for 4 weeks, instead of 2, beginning on August 1. We have started calling this our 4 x 4 x 4 program because books will check out for 4 weeks with one 4-week renewal and one 4-week grace period. In other words, students will have the option of keeping print materials for a total of 12 weeks without having to pay fines (all other materials will be subject to the original loan periods and fees). If students do not return the materials within the 4-week grace period, a $5 per item fee will apply. We are hoping that extending check out times will not only help students, but will also eliminate many of the 10 and 20 cent fines that we now must collect.

This new policy mirrors the procedure put into place a year ago by 65 I-Share libraries, one of which is Oakton Community College. Oakton’s circulation manager had nothing but good things to say about the policy. A new tri-fold brochure and bookmark with more information will be available at the library starting in August. If you would like more information about this new program, please feel free to call us at any time @ 847.543.2619.

We hope this new policy will provide our students with more time to use our materials which will result in better service. Happy summer!

Streaming Music Now Available

CLC Library added Music Online, a streaming music service to its list of databases. Music Online includes collections for American Song, Classical Music, Jazz, Contemporary World Music, and the Smithsonian Global Sound, all searchable through the Music Online interface. It also includes some popular music

This resource is available to current CLC students, faculty and staff and can be found on the library's digital downloads page. Using Music Online you may create an account to maintain personal playlists that can be shared with other CLC students and faculty. Though this is a streaming service, there are free weekly downloads available, featuring songs from all of the collections.

Book Review: Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human

Richard Wrangham has stumbled across a startlingly new concept. It is generally agreed that the ability to tame fire is what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom, but nobody really questioned exactly how it made us human. We may never know all the details, but Wrangham presents a compelling fresh new look at what made us the way we are.

The book explores the fallacies of a raw food diet and then goes onto present lots of evidence for why Homo sapiens were never designed to eat just raw food. It is widely suggested that an earlier ancestral species found a way to obtain and eat meat (resulting in our first brain size increase), which is a more efficient source of food than a vegetarian diet provides. At some point, our ancestors discovered that using fire made food even more energy efficient and Wrangham believes this is why our ancestors' brains increased a second time less than two million years ago. Why? Simply because cooked food takes less energy for our bodies to digest and use than food in its raw form.

Wrangham goes on to explore how this would explain the changes in our physiology and anatomy, how it would have forced humans to create stronger social bonds, and his belief that the advent of cooking is was also the beginning of the male-female marriage relationships we have today (including why the female was now put in a submissive role). His book is definitely food for thought.

Book Review: American Plastic: Boob Jobs, Credit Cards, and Our Quest for Perfection

This may seem like an academic book, but it really isn't. While Laura Essig is a professor, there is so much ground covered that many statements are a bit too generalized to be called scholarly literature. Don't let that stop you from reading what she has to say, though.

The connection she makes between plastic money and plastic body modifications, such as tummy tucks and facelifts, is one of those "Huh, I never thought about it that way before" ideas. While her focus roams from how it effects the economy to feminism, she continues to explain just how prevalent the desire for bodily perfection is today and how we got here.

Such plastic surgeries used to be available only to the rich, but the advent of the credit card opened this option up to general public. The economic collapse barely hit the plastic surgery market. Instead, 71 percent of the surgeries were for people with household incomes of less than 60,000.

Her humor keeps the book from being overly dire, but her overlying message is that we cannot escape the plastic society we now live in, only rebel against it; those who attempt to find that they cannot because of the very nature of plasticity: the ability to bend and reform itself.

Library Design Contest Winners Announced

When the College of Lake County Library opened in 1974, students searched for resources using massive card catalogs. There was not a computer in sight. Although the CLC library's second floor layout has not changed a lot since then, student and instructor information needs have evolved. Today's users require spaces where they can work individually or in groups, with computers and wireless Internet at their disposal. They need flexible spaces that support problem solving and collaborative learning.

To engage CLC students in creating a library space that is better suited to their needs, the CLC library and the architechtural technology program co-sponsored a contest to help redesign the second floor of the library at the Grayslake Campus. Taking place on April 15th, 2001, the contest was open to students as well as community members.

You may have heard of or watched the youtube video titled The Story of Stuff. If not, its worth checking out. There's a book written by the video's creator, Annie Leonard. The video examines the lifecycle, of, well, stuff by looking how things are created, bought, and thrown away. Leonard focuses on the idea that as a society we have "more" stuff than ever before, but cohesively, it is making us sad, not happy. She suggests - 1) reducing the need to work more by spending less and 2) value time over having more stuff

Donations for Japan's Earthquake Disaster

A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami has rocked the east coast of Japan leaving thousands homeless and without clean water, food or adequate shelter. In response, the Department of Student Activities will be hosting a donation center to benefit the Japan Relief Fund with the American Red Cross Society. Donation centers will be posted in the Atrium and outside the Student Activities Office during periodic lunch hours. Alternately, you may drop off donations, made payable to the American Red Cross Society, in room C101 at the main campus.

Graphic Novels - Ender's Game: Battle School

When I heard that there was a comic adaptation of one of my favorite sci-fi novels, I was absolutely ecstatic. I had every expectation that Marvel would not fail in creating a faithful representation of a story so well known and acknowledged in the literary community. Luckily, Marvel did not let me down.

War never changes. This is what drives the story of Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game. Originally written as a short story in 1977 by Card, it wasn’t until later that he novelized the story to provide more depth for the characters. Instead of kids playing cowboys and Indians though, it’s now astronauts and Formics (the main alien antagonists). It’s also these children that Earth will rely on to replenish their forces to defend Earth. The story follows a child named Ender Wiggin, as he tries to survive the physically challenging and soul-wrenching Battle School. Yet what nobody knows though is that Ender could very well be the key for mankind’s survival against the Formic threat. Ender’s Game: Battle School not only represents the first-half of the novel well, but is also a prime example of how well a novel can be transitioned into a comic.

Whenever I begin reading any comic based on a novel, I always question whether the original source material would be useful in providing the dialogue for the comic. Fortunately, Christopher Yost does a fantastic job in scripting the dialogue and transitioning the original source material. The writing is engaging and captivating enough to keep the reader reading on and throughout the story it will make you question the morality behind the concept of the Battle School. Most importantly, the writing makes the characters relatable and the personalities of the characters are very well presented. In order to make a comic adaptation what it is though you need to have an art style that can be just as captivating as it’s writing.

Thankfully, Pasqual Ferry and Frank D’Armata do a perfect job in representing the settings of the story. The art style is equally engaging as the writing. The colors used to depict the futuristic setting can range anywhere between the warm yellow-green colors seen in nature to the cold grey-black of metal and space. All of this is done in a realistic manner that fully represents the futurism of the novel’s setting and makes for a beautifully drawn comic.

I cannot fully express how much I love this comic, but do not take my personal opinion as the primary reason I’ve given as much praise as I’ve had. As a graphic novel, this comic is a wonderful example of how well one can be made. The writing is clear, captivating, engaging, and most of all relatable. Which is reinforced by how beautiful the artwork is. Much like the writing, the art is captivating enough to keep the reader going on and creates a believably stunning futuristic setting. All these qualities go a long way towards showing just how well this graphic novel was put together. You can find this great read in the graphic novel section on the second floor of the LRC today!

Graphic Novels: Flight - Volume One

Flight is a collection of illustrated short stories featuring a collaboration of many lesser-known cartoonists. Much of the talent behind these stories found their beginnings in web comics, as this is a common starting point for many cartoonists in the modern Internet age. In truth, I went into reading this with no clear indication of what to expect and was somewhat surprised to find out the book wasn’t a singular story of flight. Yet, despite this you cannot dismiss Flight as a simple, unorganized, or even inferior graphic novel, by any means.

The simple premise behind each story is that every single one has something to do with flight. Once again though, the book might not fulfill the expectation an individual might have when one thinks of flight. Some of the stories work flight into the literal sense with planes, blimps, and other sci-fi vessels. While other stories use flight in a metaphorical sense, in that the characters of those stories experience something out of the norm from their everyday world. It’s in this change of concept that I found myself, instead of being confused by the lack of a cohesive story, enthralled by the inventiveness of these short vignettes.

As with any other short-story collection, the quality can only be expected to be hit-or-miss. Yet the effort put into this collective story-telling experience does not go unnoticed, as a majority of the stories were qualitatively on the higher side of the scale. What this group of rising talents managed to do was weave stories that dealt with subjects individuals question everyday; from society to family to fear and love. In all honesty, the change in subject matter from story to story is what kept me reading on. The emotion and care put into each product really resonates as you delve deeper into the pages.

Yet there were some stories that were sometimes indiscernible and almost cryptic at best, but even they don’t do much to disturb the quality of the better stories. One of my favorites was Khang Le’s “Outside My Window” which is about a little girl waking up to a very hospitable, but naïve robot trying to find a friend. Other worthy mentions include Phil Craven’s “Tug McTaggart” and “Deep Blue.”

The art styles also vary from story to story. Some are drawn to look like cartoons and others are noticeably influenced by manga. There are also some that are drawn in an almost expressionist painting style, but none of which would fall into a category of shoddy artistry. Most of the stories contain the ideals of good art, in that they use the medium not only to show, but also to tell the story. Once again though, the stories that were mentioned to be indiscernible and cryptic beforehand are plagued by the same problems in their artwork.

Overall, I would recommend Flight to anybody looking for an interesting graphic novel to pick up and just read. I found myself enjoying it immensely and it was also a nice change from the super-heroics of DC and Marvel stories. Though it might not contain a cohesive plot, it more than makes up for that in how well each individual artist presents their tale of flight. The writing is engaging, whimsical, and deals with everyday subjects. Which is only strongly supported by how well each artist has established their style of art to tell the story. I actually find myself looking forward to reading the rest of the collection. You can find this great read in the graphic novel section on the second floor of the LRC today!

Nicholas Carr's book, The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains, is definitely food for thought. Reviewers (Wall Street Journal) have acknowledged Carr's points and recognize that our Internet browsing habits have indeed affected how our minds work. We (Internet browsers) feel more distracted and seem to be losing our ability for deep thought.

An analogy that Carr uses involves an imaginary bathtub (long term memory) and a thimble (working memory.) When we read a book, we control the flow of information from one faucet and can transfer a coherent stream with our thimble to the bathtub. But on the Net, we have many faucets going full blast and we end up with a jumble of disjointed facts as we rush from faucet to faucet.

How do we fix this problem? One librarian suggests making reading a print book part of our daily routine. If we lose the ability for deep thought, we lose the ability to create new connections necessary for cultural advancement.

These hard drives contain 121 years of National Geographic magazine including every map, photograph, and article that appeared in the original magazine. we also have a hard drive available at the reference desk on the 2nd floor of the Grayslake campus library to assist in answering any questions.

The eroticization and physical objectification that are staples of the youth-focused business/media complex give the impression that exploitative, age-inappropriate sexuality is natural, normal, and even necessary. This documentary condemns the hypersexualization of kid culture and exposes the severely damaging effects of hypersexuality on young psyches—female, predominantly, but male as well. Pervasive Internet porn, which serves children as a toxic artificial standard for sexual intimacy, is also addressed. Commentary is provided by psychologist Sharon Lamb, medical and education professionals, and others working to offset the pernicious effects of “Sexy Inc.” in children’s lives. Food for Fines Results

From November 16 to December 18, 2009 the Grayslake CLC Library held their annual 'Food for Fines' canned food drive in which donations could be exchanged for certain amounts of fines. Yet again, it was a great success! David Ross sent this email as thanks:

"I just finished delivering 619 pounds of food to COOL from the "Food for Fines"! Please send my congratulations and thanks to the staff who assisted with this project. The pantry was very busy today and they are handing out MANY baskets of food. The contributions will help greatly!"

LakeShore Campus Library Opening a Grand Success

LakeShore Library celebrated its grand opening in style on Monday, January 24. Over 30 people (including students, faculty, administrators, and members of the community) were on hand to officially welcome the library to its permanent home in N-214 at the Lakeshore campus. The grand opening featured a ribbon cutting that included the Mayor of Waukegan, CLC board members, and other dignitaries.

Free Textbooks!!

Looking for a textbook for a class? The CLC Library has copies of many textbooks as course reserves. These course reserves can be checked out for either 2 hours, 4 hours, or sometimes 2 days depending on what the instructor sets as a loan period.

An example of a text book that the CLC Library has available on reserve is the 5th edition of Precalculus : Enhanced with Graphing Utiltiies by Michael Sullivan.

So what does this mean?

This Textbook normally would cost $176, but you can use it for free by checking it out from the library.

The library does not have every text book for every class, but you can search for course reserves from the library's online catalog. You can search by either course or instructor. We have a video to help walk you through how to search for course reserves here at the library.

Library Tips: Where Can I Study in the Library?

You can study anywhere at any time in the CLC Library. We offer WiFi via our Lancernet Server and outlets for use by your electronic devices, such as laptops, DVD players, chargers, and so on. The Computer and Reference Lab on the first and second floor are always available for research, group work, and self study. However, there are also several additional locations you may not have been aware of:

First Floor
The entire first floor Computer Lab is open for study use.
Art Gallery- A small, quiet study area with tables and chairs are offered to patrons and students just inside the Gallery along the back wall. Please be respectful of others and of the area.

Second Floor
Reference Lounge- In the second floor computer reference area, there are several NEW tables and chairs set up for tutor work, self study, etc that were set up over the 2009-10 Winter Break.
Reference Area (Reading Lounge)- Across from the Reference Labs and to the left of the stairway are the book stacks and areas set up for solitary, quiet self-study (please use the Lounge or study rooms for group work).

Study Rooms- Study rooms are available on the 2nd floor in the Reference Area. To ‘Check out’ a study room simply approach the First Floor Circulation Desk and make a request. You must have your CLC Library Card in order to do this, and the rooms can be rented for up to three (3) hours.

Ground Level

Tables and chairs are available for use on the ground level of the CLC Library.

Michelle Carter, librarian extraordinaire, has been selected to receive the NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence! The award is given based on a faculty member’s teaching effectiveness, professional development and service to CLC and the community. Michelle will be going to Austin, Texas in late May to receive the award!

Since its inception in 1978, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) has emphasized the importance of teaching and leadership excellence in institutions of higher education. NISOD has worked to serve, engage, and inspire teachers and leaders through our conferences, publications, web services, partnerships, programs, and more.

BRING YOUR "A" GAME

October 28 and 29, 2010 brought the exciting and enlightening first Male Student Success Conference to College of Lake County. Day one of the conference was attended by over 250 high students, 92 CLC students and over 40 CLC faculty and staff. Day two of the conference saw over 250 adult representatives from more than ten institutions of higher learning from surrounding CLC districts.

One of the key presenters from the conference was Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe, Founder and Executive Director for the Student African American Brotherhood, (SAAB). Dr. Bledsoe shared an inspiring video about the plight of Black men and boys in the United States. The video is intended to engage and inspire a national conversation about the plight of young black men. The video is also intended to encourage us to reach out to the young men in need.

Events: Toys for Tots Drive

The College of Lake County is now an official drop site for Toys for Tots sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. A donation box is located in the library, as well as other places on all three CLC campuses. Donations of new, unwrapped, toys for ages infant to 17 years old will be accepted. Please no food, clothes, stuffed animals (they get dirty), or toy weapons (guns, knives, swords, etc). If you would like to make a cash donation please visit the local Toys for Tots website.

The toy drive starts this week and will run to December 17th. All donated toys will go to children in Lake County. If you can't make it to the library and would still like to make a donation, Toy for Tots drop boxes are also available inside Toys-R-Us stores nationwide.

Events: Holiday Art Sale

Unique holiday gift ideas for art lovers will abound at CLC's 20th annual holiday art sale, which will be held from Saturday, November 20th through Tuesday, November 23rd in the library atrium at the Grayslake campus. The juried sale will feature original art by 36 different Illinois and Wisconsin artists including hand-made jewelry, wearable art, decorative and functional ceramics, wood, metal, sculpture, fused and blown glass, mosaics, baskets and candles.

To celebrate the sale's 20th year, a quartet from the CLC Singers will perform Saturday and Monday from 11:30am to 12:30pm .

Self-Checkout: A Students Perspective

Located on the second level of the CLC library is a kiosk for Self-Checkout, which terrified me at first. My thoughts launched back to my few attempts at using the Self-Checkout systems at my local Jewel-Osco, which resulted in embarrassment and confusion every time, regardless of the ‘practice’ (by which I mean pounding on the system and battling with the sensors that so desperately wished to weigh my items), I still failed. I have sworn off all Self-Checkouts until the other day when I decided to give the CLC Library systems a chance. I finally got to the first three volumes of Fables (kudos to the CLC students or staff who have been able to get them before me, aren’t they great?), and decided that since I had to write a blog about it anyway, I may as well get a first-hand experience. Needless to say, I was impressed. In several simple steps including a scan of my ID and books, I was printed receipt and didn’t even set off the alarms as I walked out. I was thrilled to finally checkout swiftly without feeling I was bothering anyone and I didn’t have to lug the books around as I worked. You are also able to return them by the kiosk as well.

How to do it:
1)Scan your ID under the reader
2)Scan your books barcode (one by one) and place the book or other item into black container, remove when prompted
3)Press button in bottom left corner to End
4)Receipt will print with book information and due dates under each item
5)DONE!

Now you are free to go and leave the library with your items, and because the kiosk will deactivate them while you checkout, the sensors will not be set off. Currently, only one exists, and this gem can be found at the top of the stairs next to the copiers of the CLC library.

When checking-out library materials, you are being trusted with their safety and their timely return. Think of it like this: when you’re running late for dinner, you call your family, friend, or significant other to let them know you will be late. This is essentially what we want you to do with the material you remove from the library: simply let us know it’s ok and will be returned by the next due date. You can do this in two easy ways. Note: Overdue books CANNOT be renewed to avoid fines

Online: To do this online, you will need your CLC Library Card number. Simply go to the library main website, select ‘Services’ from the dropdown menus, and choose the first option ‘Check out and Renew’. Or, Click Here. Follow the on-site instructions to easily and conveniently renew your material.

The Little Library that Could

Is it really a campus without a library? No need to ponder this philosophical question any longer, as we are celebrating the graduation of Lakeshore Campus library service to that of Lakeshore Campus Library. For the past three years, we have been serving students in a corner of the Testing Center with the supportive welcome of Joann Jacobs and the entire staff. We will soon move across the hall to Room N-214, which is shown in the above photo of the new door with accompanying sidelights. Skyway Writers Festival and Competition

The annual Skyway Writers Festival and Competition is upon us. It will be held on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, 1:30-5:30 PM, at Morton College. This event is FREE and open to students and guests from any of the sponsoring Skyway Consortium Colleges. There will be an open mic session, workshops, a keynote address, and awards. As an integral part of this festival, there is a student writer competition in the categories of: fiction, poetry, drama/screenplay, and literary nonfiction. Each school in the conference is allowed to send 5 manuscripts in each category for judging in the final competition. The deadline for submission at CLC is NOON on Friday, Oct. 29, 2010. Are you interested in World War II history? The history of the war is alive at the Pacific Wrecks website. Thirty-three year-old son of schoolteachers, Justic Taylan, visits the Pacific each year to search remote jungles for wartime relics "forgotten by everyone except fellow wreck hunters, U.S. military officials, and veterans."

Justin has captured digital images of vine-entangled wreckage of various aircraft. HIs website documents airplane crash sites in the Pacific - his mission: locate undiscovered U.S. airplane wreckage and determine the fates of thousands of American airmen will listing as missing in the Pacific Theater.

Library Display Highlights Environmental Action

Are we changing the planet so it’s inhabitable? The time is now to change to alternative energy sources. There are things we can do locally. Let the politicians know that this is important to you and for coming generations. Get involved. Go to 350. org and find a group to participate with on 10/10/10. At the least , don’t make it worse. Find ways to lessen our impact every day. The library has many resources that will help you get the information that could change the status quo. There are people who lead the way, Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth and James Hansen, author of Storms of my grandchildren. Come see the display on the second floor of the library for more ideas. Don’t be complacent!

Banned Books Week
